“If I should not survive, how I die will show me who I really am”
Etty Hillesum, a sensuous, intelligent and poetic young Dutch Jewish woman, wrote in her diaries about the life she was living in 1942 German-occupied Holland. This play, adapted and performed by Susan Stein and directed by Austin Pendleton, is drawn from Etty’s diaries. It brings the audience into Etty’s life and she faces the horrors of her circumstances yet finds an unshakeable force within herself to be able to stand up to those out to destroy her. In the midst of two separate love affairs, she “happens upon” prayer and discovers a reality she calls God.
For the second act, actress and playwright Susan Stein brings the conversation into our own times. In this touching exploration of the human spirit, she brings Etty’s wish to life — to “have a bit of a say” in what she hoped would be a new world.
