Matthew 1:1-7,17
In his days may righteousness flourish and peace abound,
until the moon is no more.
(Psalm 72.7)
The world is in deep need. Thousands of quivering voices herald each rising of the sun and each setting of the moon. If one is sensitive, one can almost hear the sighing of the oppressed, the whimpering of the sick and the starving, the moaning of those whose lives and livelihoods have been dramatically changed by the systematic degradation of the earth and the ecosystem. Less evident, but very real is the spiritual need in which so many millions find themselves. Idolatry, superstition, unforgiven sin, lack of purpose in life are everywhere.
What is to be our response to these many and diverse needs? It is not to hide behind the walls of our affluence and prosperity or even within the walls of our hallowed sanctuaries. It is “…to defend the cause of the poor of the people, give deliverance to the needy and crush the oppressor.” (Psalm 72.4). Our Lord did not encourage us to reach for the moon; He encourages us to go into the world. He did not instruct us to stay close to our sanctuaries and altars made by human hands but directed into the world to relate to the oppressed and the affluent, the sick and healthy, of every colour and race and creed to tell them about the righteousness, mercy and grace of God our Creator through the Messiah who comes to us as a defenseless infant.
“Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, who alone does wondrous things. Blessed be his glorious name forever; may his glory fill the whole earth. Amen and amen.” (Psalm 72:18-19)
