Stained Glass Panel with the Visitation, Metropolitan Museum of Art

2 Samuel 7:1-16
Psalm 89:1-4, 19-29
Luke 1: 67-79

The waiting is almost over, and on Christmas Eve as we celebrate midnight Mass, many of us will sing this beautiful plainsong:

Let all mortal flesh keep silence
And with fear and trembling stand;
Ponder nothing earthly minded.
For, with blessing in his hand
Christ our God to earth descendent.
Our full homage to demand.                                      (in the Public Domain)

We have continued waiting throughout Advent until this past fourth Sunday of Advent, and the proclamation of Love.   Later this evening, we will rejoice with the arrival of our Saviour and once again embark on a new beginning. Often, we have come to this time in silent meditation and in prayerful thanksgiving for the awaited birth of our Saviour and for all the blessings in our lives. The lessons and the psalm tell of the love of God for us. David the Psalmist reminds us that God is always present in our lives and His love for us is never-ending. The Gospel according to Luke is clear that we should not doubt His love; we are reminded to listen quietly and faithfully, and we will learn of God’s plan for us in the coming of our Saviour. That message is once again reinforced by Samuel ….

This Christmas Eve, the waiting is almost over.

Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia. Lord Most High.

The King of Kings is here.
