Isaiah 11:1-10
Psalm 72:1-8
Romans 15:4-13
Matthew 3:1-12
As we move into the second week of Advent, the theme is “peace”. But as I read the readings for today, it was “hope” that jumped out at me. I pondered this for some time. As I look at the wars raging throughout the world, it is the aggressors who try to stamp out hope, while the victims tend to remain hopeful that a solution will be found that will bring a future of peace.
In Isaiah, the hope of a peaceful future for Israel rests with a new king descended from Jesse. The spirit will be upon him, He will be wise and understanding, powerful and effective, able to judge for the benefit of the poor, and obedient to God. There will be justice for all, as his reign is one of righteousness and faithfulness.
Psalm 72 describes the ideal king filled with justice and righteousness, who will govern with compassion. “In his days may righteousness flourish and peace abound, until the moon is no more.” (v.7)
Paul says, ‘May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in harmony with one another, in accordance with Christ Jesus.’ (Romans 15:5)
Peace is possible. As we wait for the birth of our Saviour, may we be emboldened to move beyond hope, and into action for peace.
