Special Opportunity: John Philip Newell

John Philip Newell

Listening for the Heartbeat of GodWe welcome to our Food for the Soul series John Philip Newell, the celebrated author of many books, including Listening for the Heartbeat of God: A Celtic Spirituality. He is one of the most prominent Christian teachers of spirituality in the Western world.

Born in Canada, educated in Scotland, formed by years of leadership on the Holy Island of Iona, he now lives in Edinburgh and teaches internationally - see www.heartbeatjourney.org »

He will lead a weekend retreat and will also be our featured speaker on the Friday evening in an event open to the public.

Friday Evening Lecture: Listening to the Heartbeat of God

Friday, November 2, 2018

One of the most cherished images in the Celtic world is the memory of John the Beloved leaning against Jesus at the Last Supper. It was said of him that he heard the heartbeat of God, and has become a symbol of the practice of deep listening for the beat of the Sacred within ourselves, one another, and the earth.

This stream of Christian wisdom from the earliest centuries is flowing again. It moves us to be aware of the Sacred at the heart of every moment and calls us back into true relationship with the earth, one another, and ourselves.

  • Begins at 7 pm on Friday, November 2, 2018
  • Followed by a reception and book signing
  • The cost is $20 if a cheque is received at the Guest House by October 19

Weekend Retreat: A Celtic Well of Wisdom

Friday–Sunday, November 2–4, 2018

A weekend retreat drawing from the Celtic well of wisdom, a spirituality for today inspired by great teachers in the Celtic world, from as early as Ireland’s 5th-century St Brigid of Kildare to France’s 20th century’s prophet of earth-consciousness, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin.

The retreat will consist of presentations followed by times of meditation and small-group sharing. Throughout the weekend there will be periods of silence and we will join the Sisters of St John in their daily pattern of prayer. Friday evening lecture included.

  • Arrivals and registration 2-4 pm Friday; ends 1:30 pm Sunday
  • PLEASE NOTE : Overnight and commuter registrations for this retreat are now fully booked. A waiting list is being maintained for overnight guests should there be any cancellations. Registration here »
  • Full payment must be made by October 2, 2018

  • All retreats and quiet days at St. John’s Convent take place in the milieu of a contemporary monastic community which has a daily rhythm of prayer. All guests are invited to take part in the daily Eucharist, and those staying overnight may like to join us in the Divine Office (Morning Prayer, Evening Prayer, and Compline).
